Really, both methods work just fine. It all depends on the spirit animal in question. Demon Bees? Respond best to a master. Cats, demon or otherwise? Do not take kindly to a “master,” but are quite fine companions. Horses? Could go either way, really.
Yeah, “let’s be FRIENDS!” is what certain people will find more palatable, but asserting dominance is not cruel or wrong. They are just two different methods that work equally well in different situations.
I find it interesting that you’ve read into my favor of “we do not own spirit animals” as “let’s be friends.” Far from it.
In my case, in grew up in a home that has a very different take on spirits than Western cultures do: my mother taught me to respect the spirits. You can’t tell them what to do and they have all the power. You’re in their space, not the other way around.
So from this standpoint, owning or dominating a spirit is taboo. It’s not a matter of cruelty at all. It’s respect.
I’m inclined to believe that it’s probably somewhere between the two. Respect does seem to be a big part of it, but “No one being can own another” doesn’t sound like we’re talking about a full reversal with us being in their space. Likely more of an issue of mutual respect, which would also be less inclined to rule out friendship or camaraderie while not necessitating it either.
This is where I hang back and let the theories fly! I don’t want to influence you all one way or the other but I’m really enjoying the conversation and am interested to know how you’ll all interpret the coming pages.
First off – well done! The expressions on his page are fantastic. Especially how Subira’s expression looks disappointed when she voices the assumption that the cat spirit belongs with Soma and not her. In general there seems to be a coming clash of old ways and traditions with new ones – with a demon army as the catalyst. The difference between the views: “We do not own our spirit animals” vs “You must own your spirit animal” may be just one of many differences in this clash.
I like the girl ways better =[
ditto
I say mastering those bees sounds cooler. All will bow before Idem, Lord of the Bees!

I’m going to hazard that it’s at least partly due to different means of connecting to the spirit world.

She totally left the door open for “more than one being” owning another, like in some kind of partnership deal! Ima keep my eye on her…
I ship them
This people are incredibly terrible at their job.
Is any of this even written in a book?
