Umm, that looks more like an ukulele, tenor-size, than a lute which usually has no waist, so he can play! They’ve heard him sing before?
From panel eight, I’d say they’ve heard him play PLENTY.
That, or they can’t tolerate another rendition of “The Man They Call Tane”. With enough renditions, their intolerance would not be hard to explin.
Great catch! The original script had Elk playing a lute, but Lee, the artist, plays the uke so naturally he wanted to draw the instrument he plays. I thought about changing the sign to say, “Open Uke Night” but it didn’t have quite the same ring to it. I figured in the modern world, people play guitars, bongos, etc at “Open Mic Night” so it still works.
Better listen to the guy, Elk. That dude has a +2 mustache and god knows what else.
Lee refers to that mustache as the “Hulk Hogan.” Originally Elk was supposed to say, “Right. So Anyway…” in that last panel, but I thought the dude’s mean expression, and Elk shying away as he lowers the uke said it much better.
Yeah, someday I hope to be able to grow a ‘stache that automatically adds “or else” to everything I say like that dude’s.
That reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RD1KqbDdmuE
