I suspect you’re confused. This is future-hazeldella writing down the story. She just got interrupted because doctor-guy needs her to get back to work and help out with that guy’s foot that was mentioned earlier.
She’s not updating the notebook while she’s supposed to be birthing a child. She’s lying about updating the notebook while she’s supposed to be helping a man with his foot problems, which admittedly is still not ideal considering how severe the situation sounds to be. Hope doctor-guy’s being dramatic.
The subject of differentiating between flashback and present day is something we are conscious of. I like the way Raina Telgemeier did it in her book Smile (just won an Eisner award) it just involved printing on different colored paper. We’ll see come printing time.
This is actually my favorite page of the prologue. Lee did a great job with Hazeldella’s facial expressions. Really great.
I’m particularly enjoying those last two panels with the feather.
Aaaaa! It’s the BEST page! Hazeldella is amazing, seriously.
Hazeldella, if karma works in your universe, you’d better try your upmost to avoid getting pregnant. :p
“upmost?”
