It’s pretty dumb for kids in that type of society even being outside after dark. Especially without a lantern. Animals that would find any one of them a tasty snack come out after dark, excluding the factor of the complete darkness itself.
While I completely agree that 99.4% of ideas that teenage boys have = really dumb, Gong and Dossmon would have the advantage of a lifelong familiarity with the area. Plus (and I apologize for never actually drawing it), there is a full moon this night, and there’s only a few clouds. Even in the absence of any other light, a full moon makes things brighter than you’d think. As for natural predators, most avoid human civilization, even a smaller village (assuming the villagers eat meat with their zucchini on occasion). As for UN-natural predators… well, I guess they just found out about that the hard way.
My take is that the village itself is usually pretty safe. Guardians have safeguarded the area for generations. Malicious entities get taken out. The rest are no threat or are smart enough to give the village a wide berth. I think this may contribute so some of our villagers confident/complacent attitudes as of late.
I’m amused by how, once the girl is no longer there, Gong started helping Dossmon, pushing him out of Thoom’s way, helping him back on his feet and leading him to his house for shelter.
Yup, they are Best Mates For Life (much more of a bond than BFFs), and like all BMFLs, their ‘kryptonite’ is a pretty girl (or, failing to find a pretty one, simply being female and of the appropriate age is an acceptable substitute :P)
Of all the ways tonight could’ve gone badly for them, they’re probably glad THIS was the one that finally caught up with them.

Lets see what we can do about that…
Teenage boys acting stupid? For a girl? …yep.
